Guest bedroom refresh

This is the whole Nailed It experience from two phone photos — the read on the space, the ideas, a materials list with the math shown, and every step in order. It's a hand-written example, so it's always here and always instant.

The photo, and the concept

The photo you'd scan
The concept Nailed It draws from it

The vision the owner typed: Paint the walls a deep sage green, add floating oak shelves above the desk, and keep the original wood floor.

What Nailed It sees

A sound, mostly empty guest bedroom with original hardwood, one west-facing window and unused wall above the desk.

High confidence

Walls
Painted drywall, flat finish, some scuffs by the door — 414 sq ft total
Floor
Original oak hardwood, good condition, no squeaks
Ceiling
Painted drywall, smooth, 9 ft

Estimated 12 ft × 11 ft × 9 ft — 414 sq ft of wall to paint

  • One west-facing window with white blinds
  • Two outlets on the south wall
  • Closet with bifold doors
  • About 5 ft of empty wall above the desk

The ideas it gave back

Three options at different budgets and effort levels — the first one follows the vision word for word.

1.Sage green paint + floating shelves

Paint all four walls deep sage green and hang three oak floating shelves over the desk. The color does the heavy lifting; the shelves give the room a job.

$260 – $420 Beginner About 8 hours

2.Board-and-batten accent wall

Vertical battens on the wall behind the bed, painted the same sage green. A bigger statement for about the same paint budget.

$180 – $300 Intermediate About 10 hours

3.Desk nook with pegboard and task light

Turn the corner by the window into a proper work nook with a painted pegboard, a clamp light and a cable tray underneath.

$140 – $230 Beginner About 5 hours

Materials list, with the math

Quantities come from the room's real dimensions, not a guess — this is the arithmetic the app shows you.

Sage green wall paint, eggshell

3 gal · $38 – $52 each

414 sq ft of wall × 2 coats = 828 sq ft. One gallon covers about 350 sq ft, so 828 ÷ 350 = 2.4 → round up to 3 gallons.

Stain-blocking primer

1 gal · $22 – $30

Only the scuffed door wall needs it — roughly 100 sq ft, one coat, and 1 gallon covers 350 sq ft.

Painter's tape

3 rolls · $6 – $9 each

One roll tapes about 60 ft of trim. Baseboard, door and window trim total about 150 ft.

Roller kit + angled brush

1 each · $18 – $26

A 9 in roller for the field, a 2 in angled brush for cutting in at the ceiling and trim.

Canvas drop cloths

2 · $8 – $14 each

One under the bed side, one under the desk side — the room is 12 ft × 11 ft.

Floating oak shelves, 36 in

3 · $32 – $48 each

The wall above the desk is 60 in wide; three 36 in shelves with about 12 in between them fills it without crowding.

Shelf cleats + 3 in lag bolts

3 sets · $9 – $14 each

One cleat per shelf, two lag bolts per stud. Studs sit every 16 in across a 60 in wall = 4 studs.

Sanding sponge + wood filler

1 each · $12 – $18

For the scuffs and the old nail holes — one sponge and one small tub is plenty for a room this size.

Paintable caulk

1 tube · $6 – $9

Re-caulking the baseboard line, about 46 ft around the room.

Estimated total

$340 – $560 before tools you may already own

The step-by-step plan

Eight steps, in the order you'd actually do them, with a time estimate for each.

  1. 1

Clear the room and protect the floor

Move the desk and bed to the middle, lay the drop cloths, and take the outlet covers off.

    about 45 min

  2. 2

Fill the scuffs and old nail holes

Wood filler on the holes, spackle on the scuffs. Let it set, then sand flush and wipe the dust.

    about 40 min

  3. 3

Tape the trim, window and outlets

Press the tape down firmly — paint bleeds under a loose edge.

    about 30 min

  4. 4

    Prime the scuffed wall

One coat of stain-blocking primer on the door wall so the marks don't show through green.

    about 45 min

  5. 5

Cut in the edges, then roll the walls

Brush a 3 in band along the ceiling and trim, then roll the field. Two coats, about 2 hours apart.

    about 180 min

  6. 6

Pull the tape and touch up

Take the tape off while the last coat is barely tacky, then touch up any spots with a small brush.

    about 30 min

  7. 7

Find the studs and mark the shelf line

Stud finder across the 60 in wall, mark 4 studs, and set the shelf heights at 12 in apart above the desk.

    about 30 min

  8. 8

Hang the shelves and style the nook

Level one cleat, lag it into the studs, mount the shelf, then repeat. Books and a plant go on last.

    about 90 min

Before you start

  • Paint with a window open and a fan running — the room stays closed for two hours after each coat.
  • Use a stud finder and lag bolts for the shelves: drywall anchors alone can't hold books.
  • Wear eye protection when drilling overhead, and shut the power off at the breaker if you swap the outlet cover.
