Renter-friendly DIY ideas

Every idea here reverses when you move out, and the most any of them leaves behind is a small screw hole you can fill in a minute: nothing glued to a painted wall, and nothing else a landlord would notice. Each one says what it takes to reverse it.

8 ideas, with costs

  • A leaned full-height mirror with a safety strap

    $40 – $120

Lean it against the wall and secure the top with an anti-tip strap screwed into the wall (one small hole you can spackle at move-out). Never rely on adhesive alone for a mirror or anything glass.

  • Curtains on a tension or adhesive rod

    $40 – $110

A pressure-fit rod holds a floor-length panel with no holes at all, and hanging it 2 in below the ceiling makes the room feel taller. It reverses by unscrewing the rod.

  • Removable wallpaper on one wall

    $80 – $250

A 12 ft wall takes about 60 sq ft of peel-and-stick paper. Check the label for the finish it is safe on: it comes away cleanly from cured painted drywall, and badly from fresh paint.

  • Adhesive LED strip under the kitchen cabinets

    $25 – $60

A plug-in strip with removable clips lights a counter for far less than an electrician would charge. Warm the adhesive pads with a hairdryer and they lift off without a mark.

  • A leaning ladder shelf instead of wall shelves

    $90 – $220

A floor-standing ladder shelf takes the weight of books without a single stud, held by one removable strap. It leaves behind one patch of spackle.

  • A no-damage gallery wall

    $30 – $100

Frames on removable adhesive strips rated 2 to 16 lb each, laid out on paper on the floor first. Keep every frame under the strip's rating and press for the full 30 seconds.

  • Under-bed drawers on casters

    $60 – $140

If the bed already has clearance, two rolling drawers slide under and out. Nothing is fixed to anything, so it leaves as easily as it arrived.

  • Tension-rod storage in cabinets and showers

    $25 – $70

One tension rod inside a cabinet or a shower opening holds spray bottles and cleaning gear out of the way, and comes back out with no marks at all.

Frequently asked questions

Will peel-and-stick wallpaper damage the wall?
Not on a clean, painted, fully cured wall, if you follow the removal instructions and pull slowly at a low angle. It can lift fresh paint or bare plaster, so test one strip somewhere hidden first.
How much weight can removable adhesive strips hold?
Between 2 and 16 lb each, depending on the size. Use two strips for anything over 5 lb, and never hang a mirror or anything glass on adhesive alone.
Do I need permission to paint a rental?
Usually yes, and it is often granted if you repaint it back at the end. Ask in writing and keep the color details so you can match the original.
Which of these can be undone in an hour?
The mirror, the curtains, the LED strip, the tension rods and the under-bed drawers. The mirror and the ladder shelf leave one small screw hole each, and everything else comes off without a mark.
